One week ...in defiance of the cold grey winds blowing snow against our large front windows.... our group bloomed in colourful butterflies We were hungry for Spring, so we choose an activity to focus on change.
The women often use butterflies in their drawings,
paintings, and collages and are familiar with how they can represent
metamorphosis, new life and hope. They were provided with an array of stencils,
foam and card shapes, stickers, tissue papers, branches etc etc and asked to make
their individual portrayal of transformation.
They were also given a hand-out sheet with several quotes and sayings on the theme:
Butterflies can't see their wings so they don't see how beautiful they are. Sometimes people are like that...
Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over it became a butterfly...
Until you spread your wings you'll never know how far you can fly..
One woman filled her page with different butterflies, each a variation of her distinctive bold style. She explained that each one represented a time in her life when she came through a dark time to become a better person.
Another woman constructed an intricate sculpture topped by a butterfly with moving wings. She spoke of poor choices in her past that she had moved through and her hopes that the butterfly would inspire her to begin walking more.
Another participant expressed admiration for the the strength that enables them to make long migrations. "They are not as delicate as they seem" she said "and neither are we".
One woman experimented with several ways of portraying Transformation then ended up with a twirling strand of gossamer shapes. "What do you see?" she asked.. butterflies dancing? "No" she laughed, " Dragonflies... our perceptions are the key to transformations"
And that insight was so wise that it led to the next week's activity.
